and north north carolina. florida. that's a formula politics, as you know, you want to grow. you don't want to do things that shrink. that's an area that is incumbent on the president to give a framework. i say this as a democrat. democrats shouldn't just talk about this issue as we're better than republicans. i mean, democrats need to be very affirmative about how important the latino population is to our country. they did great things day in an day out. they're a great part of our future, and it has to be more than hey we're better than the republicans. this is a very important constituency and we need to do right by them. >> gavin: what about gay marriage. there are some final counts in washington state but the three states--two states affirmative and the one that pulled back in minnesota some draconian legislation. what is your sense of that. you were in the thick of it, this was toxic even within our own party. >> look, you have been one of the singular leaders on this and demonstrated courage on this issue, so i imagine for someone like yourself this is great to see. >> i'm not going

wrong on the electoral vote, at least. >> i didn't get florida for him. in that column. >> belva: so, what are your thoughts now? what made you so sure that this was going to be our future? >> a couple of things. no incumbent president -- there's a lot of noise we hear day-to-day in political coverage, this person made this gaffe or that person had this many people at their rally, but the truth is, no incumbent president who has not had a challenge from his own party in the primary has lost re-election since 1932, herbert hoover. it is almost impossible to defeat an incumbent president when his party is unified. second, the auto bailout was enormous. i lived in ohio. i have family in cincinnati and toledo. 1 in 7 jobs in ohio is related to the auto industry. and there were 10,000 people working at that jeep plant in toledo. that community was terrified. and they had a clear black and white choice on that one issue. who was for them, who wasn't for them? and then, finally, there was a weak field. let's be honest. the primary candidates were one of the weakest fields that the republica

was the commander of the medical forces in pensacola, florida, and i owned the branch clinics that existed in new orleans, pascagula and gulf port, mississippi. we thought we had dodged the bullet and then the levies broke and who would have predicted that there was a sea of humanity in the super dome that basically was in extreme miss? who would have predicted in this day and age we would lose many, many people based on the fact they couldn't be medevacked, that the hospitals themselves had been flooded and the hospital staff was having to carry critically ill patients up to the top floors to avoid the water that was filling in the rooms. who would have predicted that? and were we set up to handle that? and who would have predicted in the early goings there would be civic disorder and civic disobedience and lack of command and control and then the military came there and provided that stability for a while until the civic authorities took over and eventually got things moving in a fairly organized continuum. we learned a tremendous amount of lessons from that, lessons that i hope no other ci
